  10. I recently purchased a new system from Gateway 2000 which included their
  11. Telepath 28.8 fax modem.  Whenever I try to use compression on a
  12. connection, the modem works for anywhere between 2 and 5 minutes, and
  13. then goes into handshaking la-la land for about 75 seconds.  Then it
  14. resumes (finally echoing any characters that I've typed ahead), until
  15. about 2 to 5 minutes later, when the whole thing happens again.

  17. If I turn off compression, this behavior vanishes.

  19. I've only access to one phone line here at home, but this same line has
  20. given me no problems with my previous modem, an Intel 14.4.

  22. Am I missing something here, or are these modems just very susceptable
  23. to line noise?
